- Description:
This PhD. Thesis introduces the hypothesis that multimodal human computer interaction is severely limited when no avatar is used in the system, especially in terms of non-verbal or emotional interaction. According to this, the utilization of avatars is proposed in order to generate non-verbal communication. This utilization has not been focused to a particular application. Therefore all the possibilities of interaction offered by the use of emotional avatars have been analyzed. This PhD. Thesis focuses mainly on emotional or affective aspects of facial communication, since one of the most important aspects of non-verbal communication is the facial expression of emotions. Therefore, the main objective of this PhD. Thesis is to analyze the feasibility of using avatars as a fundamental element in emotional interaction, introducing a generic architecture and evaluating it in several scenarios with different users.
